Enlarged Prostate

Many men suffer from an enlarged prostate gland. This condition, referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, is not a serious condition. Many men have an enlarged prostate and do not know it. However, when the prostate gland becomes large enough and squeezes the urethra, urinary problems can occur. When these problems begin to interfere with a man’s quality of life, he often seeks treatment. At Premier Urology, we specialize in minimally invasive treatments for BPH that help our patients return to a normal quality of life.

Watchful Waiting

One common way to treat BPH is to do nothing at all. If you can go about your normal daily routines without interference from the symptoms of your enlarged prostate, we may choose to wait and watch for increased problems. If your prostate continues to grow and begins to interfere with your lifestyle, we may pursue future treatment options.

Drug Therapy

Treating an enlarged prostate with medication is usually our first choice. Medications will either help to shrink the gland or relax the prostate and improve urinary flow. We have a variety of medications we can choose from that are generally successful in treating BPH. However, not all cases will respond to medication, so further treatment may be needed.

Other Treatment Options

When drug treatment fails, we will pursue additional minimally invasive techniques. For patients with less than 50 grams who do not like the taking medications, this is a very good alternative.

1.TUNA - (Transurethral Needle Ablation) of Prostate
2.Microwave thermal therapy.

Major Procedures that may be needed include:
1. PVP (Photovaporization of Prostate)
2. TURP (Transurethral Resection of Prostate)
3. Suprapubic Prostatectomy

Indication for major surgery:
Enlarged prostates that do not respond to medication or minimally invasive techniques could be indications for major surgery. These indications may include:
1. blockage of both kidneys due to severely blocked bladder
2. urinary tract infections from incomplete emptying
3. visible blood in the urine from chronic bladder obstruction
4. kidney failure from chronic bladder obstruction
