When you and your partner have come to the place where you realize you are no longer interested in having more children, a vasectomy can provide a permanent birth control option. By undergoing a vasectomy, your family can save hundreds of dollars over the years by no longer needing to purchase other birth control options. If you are ready for a vasectomy, contact Premier Urology today to discuss the procedure.
How It Works
Many men are unaware of the way a vasectomy works. A vasectomy is a surgery that will create permanent infertility in a man. Understanding the process requires a basic knowledge of the male reproductive anatomy.
The testicles, where sperm are made and stored, are connected to the penis through the prostate gland via two tubes known as the vas deferens. These tubes carry the sperm through the prostate gland and out of the penis when ejaculation occurs. Without these tubes, sperm cannot leave the body, thus preventing pregnancy.
During a vasectomy, your physician will then cut the vas deferens near the testicles. A small portion of the tubes is removed, and the ends are sealed shut. This requires a tiny incision on each side of the scrotum to access the tubes. The procedure can also be done using a small puncture hole rather than an incision.
Recovery
A vasectomy is an outpatient procedure requiring not hospital stay. You will rest at the doctors office for a couple of hours using ice to numb the pain in your scrotum and reduce swelling. You may experience some bruising and pain after the surgery, but this typically disappears after two weeks. You will need to bring in samples of your ejaculation for several weeks after your operation. Your doctor will confirm when the samples no longer contain sperm. This is when it is safe to engage in intercourse without backup birth control.
Many men are concerned that having a vasectomy will affect their ability to have sex. This does not happen. You can still have intercourse and experience a climax after the procedure. The only difference is that the ejaculation will not contain sperm, but you will not be able to notice this during intercourse.
